Shrub is not the first Bush War Liar...

Bear with me on this tale. Here's the link to the quote below. It seems that President Macho Pants is not the first Bush to show utter contempt for the US Military. It can hardly be said of GHWB, who did his duty, flew off of carriers into combat and really really served as the youngest Naval Aviator in history (19 years old, I believe). But his daddy, ol' Nazi-trading Prescott, he was a horse of a different color.

In June, 1918, just as his father took over responsibility for relations of the government with the private arms producers, Prescott went to Europe with the U.S. Army. His unit did not come near any fire until September. But on August 8, 1918, the following item appeared on the front page of Bush's home-town newspaper:
High Military Honors Conferred on Capt. Bush

For Notable Gallantry, When Leading Allied Commanders Were Endangered, Local Man is Awarded French, English and U.S. Crosses.

International Honors, perhaps unprecedented in the life of an American soldier, have been conferred upon Captain Prescott Sheldon Bush, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.P. Bush of Columbus.

Upon young Bush ... were conferred: Cross of the Legion of Honor, ... Victoria Cross, ... Distinguished Service Cross....

Conferring of the three decorations upon one man at one time implies recognition of a deed of rare valor and probably of great military importance as well.

From word which has reached Columbus during the last few days, it appears as if the achievement of Captain Bush well measures up to these requirements.

The incident occurred on the western front about the time the Germans were launching their great offensive of July 15.... The history of the remarkable victory scored later by the allies might have been written in another vein, but for the heroic and quick action of Captain Bush.

The ... three allied leaders, Gen. [Ferdinand] Foch, Sir Douglas Haig and Gen. [John J.] Pershing ... were making an inspection of American positions. Gen. Pershing had sent for Captain Bush to guide them about one sector.... Suddenly Captain Bush noticed a shell coming directly for them. He shouted a warning, suddenly drew his bolo knife, stuck it up as he would a ball bat, and parried the blow, causing the shell to glance off to the right....

Within 24 hours young Bush was notified ... [that] the three allied commanders had recommended him for practically the highest honors within their gift.... Captain Bush is 23 years old, a graduate of Yale in the class of 1917. He was one of Yale's best- known athletes ... was leader of the glee club ... and in his senior year was elected to the famous Skull and Bones Society....

The day after this astonishing story appeared, there was a large cartoon on the editorial page. It depicted Prescott Bush as a small boy, reading a story-book about military heroism, and saying: "Gee! I wonder if anything like that could ever truly happen to a boy." The caption below was a rehash of the batting- away- the-deadly-shell exploit, written in storybook style.

Local excitement about the military "Babe Ruth" lasted just four weeks. Then this somber little box appeared on the front page:
Editor State Journal:

A cable received from my son, Prescott S. Bush, brings word that he has not been decorated, as published in the papers a month ago. He feels dreadfully troubled that a letter, written in a spirit of fun, should have been misinterpreted. He says he is no hero and asks me to make explanations. I will appreciate your kindness in publishing this letter....

Flora Sheldon Bush.

Columbus, Sept. 5

Prescott Bush later claimed that he spent "about 10 or 11 weeks" in the area of combat in France. "We were under fire there.... It was quite exciting, and of course a wonderful experience." @s8

Prescott Bush was discharged in mid-1919, and returned for a short time to Columbus, Ohio. But his humiliation in his home town was so intense that he could no longer live there. The "war hero" story was henceforth not spoken of in his presence. Decades later, when he was an important, rich U.S. Senator, the story was whispered and puzzled over among the Congressmen.

Well isn't that a bit of interesting history? Grampaw lies about the military too...is it pathological, and somehow skipped a generation with GHWB?

Talk about utter and complete contempt for the military...

Comments:

And yet Grandpappy Prescott's record *still* one-ups GW - no matter how PB lied, he *did* serve. So while lying about military service may have skipped a generation - or maybe GHWB was trying to expunge the shame PB brought on the famly? - outright cowardice seems to be all President Macho.

I hate the Bushies as much as the next person, no - make that much much more than the next person, but that story strikes me as nothing other than a bad joke gone awry, a failed attempt at humor inadvertently taken seriously by the folks at home. Hence, the sheepish retraction and embarassment.

Certain diseases skip a generation. That explains why Poppy was a sort of real hero in WWII. Instead of like father like son, here it's like grandfather like grandson.

Well its all a game for Bush, he lied about the WMD and then he lied about trusting faulty intelligence and so on and so forth. And quite honestly i don't blame the guy much as it seems that he is not the one in charge. He is just saying those things to save face, I kinda feel sorry for him. But still i think he should not be put in a position where so much damage can be done thru him.

Your assumption that the middle Bush was the decent, honest one who skipped the nasty, lying, cowardly genes may not be correct - more likely that the Bush dynasty has attacked America like a flesh-eating virus.

George Bush Sr Is No
WWII Hero
By John S. McDonald
1-1-04

I am an 82 year old Navy pilot and I am outraged at television's depiction of George Bush Sr.'s Pacific experiences. Now, I hear a book is forthcoming - Unbelievable!!

I was in the Pacific at the same time as Bush and flew the same Avenger airplane. A small room in the rear of the Avenger was occupied by the radioman. The gunner went through the room to get up to his turret. Both wore a harness to which a chest type parachute could be attached - The gunner had to come down out of the turret to put on his chute.

Bush said he was hit by anti-aircraft fire and the plane caught fire. Bush's squadron was primarily used for patrol and saw very little combat. Bush claimed he warned the crew, over the intercom, to get out - got no answer and he could not yell back because of the armor plate behind him.

He decided they were dead, so he bailed out. First, he failed to say he switched his mike from radio to intercom. Then being blocked by the armor is a bold faced lie! There was a sizable gap on either side of the armor. I used this space to call to my crew several times.

The tough old Avenger simply did not catch fire!! It had self sealing gas tanks. In six months of operations, I never saw an Avenger catch fire. If the oil or hydraulic systems were damaged, great clouds of white smoke would stream out of the planhe. I have no idea how many times i saw planes returning to their carriers trailing smoke but never a fire.

What really happened? It was the pilots job to hold the plane level and slow it down so the crew could get out. Most certainly, the radioman was helping the gunner with his chute when Bush panicked and left the plane. Then the plane rolled into a dive giving the crew no chance. This story went through the fleet and all the Avenger pilots i knew were shocked at what they heard. I heard speculation of a Courts-Martial.

Bush was very young. By his own admission, he reacted under stress. It is terrifying to have the cockpit fill with smoke. Possibly, he can be excused for reacting to fear and accepting it as another war time tragedy - but he has been glorified on the History channel, a book is being published, and worst of all, an aircraft carrier is to be named for him. This is unbelievable!! Bush performed badly and was certainly no hero.

News flash!Grudge Report! My father-in-law just reported that he was in WW2 at the same time as Bob Dole & a fellow soldier was told by someone else that they heard from another sorce that Mr.Dole put his jeep in gear, jumped out and let it run over his arm so he could get sent home.Unfortunately for Mr.Dole it also caused some unintended injuries.Fortunately,Viagra has come along so said injuries can now be treated. This blog was sent in the same spirit as the NOT SO SWIFT BOAT VETRENARIANS AD'S.

Even if John Kerry spent his time in Viet Nam sailing up rivers in a barge sipping mint juleps, he still would have had 200% more courage than G.W. Bush. Now what about AFQUA Wing that Resident Bush is seen wearing in a photo posted through Buzzflash.com. How did he earn that?

re Prescott Bush: Let's be fair about his wartime "lying"; the WW1 tale is taller than Mt. Everest and very obviously so. Anybody who thinks a knife could deflect an incoming artillery shell is dumb enough to think he could drive a Christy Mathewson (374-187) pitch for extra bases using a soda straw for a bat. It seems the press was as gullible and devoid of sense in 1918 as it is now.

Apparently Prescott's antics were repeated by George HW who apparently was not the military hero he claimed to be, although he did enlist and serve in combat as did Prescott. If you don't have time to read further, more details about Chichi Jima are at www.PhonyFighterPilot.com which deals with the very false claims of both Bush presidents.

NEWS FLASH & PREDICTION...On September 2, the last day of the Republican National Convention, GOP delegates will most probably celebrate (exploit) the 60th anniversary of George H.W. Bush's "heroic" WWII Chichi Jima bombing mission by showing Paula Zahn’s facile coverage of Bush Sr.’s 2002 visit to Chichi Jima. But, Hugh Scott, a Republican and very experienced flier, who’s read all of the biographies and autobiographies concerning Big George, was concerned about the many versions of this story Bush Sr.has told since 09/02/44, which Gary Trudeau ridiculed in one of his strips.

Since sons often emulate their fathers, which Dub-ya obviously has done in having others do his dirty work in campaigns (see the very similar campaign histories of Father and Son at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/08/25/opinion/meyer/main638571.shtml), Scott investigated Big George’s Chichi Jima mission -- the FIRST aviation expert ever to so. Using his vast flying background (16,000 hours of multiengine pilot time plus eight years as a jetliner instructor, both military and the airlines), official U.S. Navy records, Big George's own words and living eyewitness testimony, Scott found that Big George:

• Panicked and bailed out of his flack-damaged, but flyable, Avenger warplane before two subordinate crewmembers could jump, causing radioman John Delaney and tail gunner Ted White to die in the resulting crash at sea.
• Embellished the Chichi Jima mission to win the DistinguishedFlyingCross.
• Failed to recommend his dead men for similar medals of valor.
• Rode an exaggerated war story to the White House.
• Obliterated the memory of Delaney and White along the way.
• Defamed Chester Mierzejewski, honorable Navy veteran and decorated Avenger tail gunner who, from his plane just behind Bush’s, saw Bush Sr. bail out and told the truth during the 1988 presidential campaign.

Regarding Mierzejewski, Scott is the ONLY investigative journalist to interview him since 1988 (six phone calls plus written correspondence), after Chester blew the whistle on Big George. Not even Paula Zahn took time to talk with him when she made the 2002 CNN TV production, "Flyboys," which I expect to be shown by the RNC on September 2. (Remember, you heard it here first! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!!)

Also, for the fellow who asked about Union Bank...may I suggest...
http://www.rememberjohn.com/Nazis.html , http://www.tribalmessenger.org/t-bush/bush-family-history-pt1.htm ,

and other sites which document the seizure, in 1942, of the Union Banking Corporation which is noted in Hugh Scott's book, Phony Fighter Pilot. The US Government charged Prescott Bush, Dubya’s grandfather, under the Trading with the Enemy Act. All the Bank’s shares were seized, including those held by Prescott Bush, as being in effect held for enemy nationals. Once the government had its hands on the Bank’s books the whole story of the intricate web of Nazi front organizations began to unravel. A few days later, two of Union Banking's subsidiaries, Holland American Trading Corporation and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation, were also seized. The government went after the Harriman Fifteen Corporation, which Bush shared with his father-in-law Bert Walker, the Hamburg-Amerika line, and the Silesian-American Corporation. The US Government found that huge sections of Prescott Bush's empire had been operated on behalf of Nazi Germany and had greatly assisted the German war effort."

The first noted website also notes that “(t)wo months before the November 1988 presidential election, a small newspaper, Washington Jewish Week, disclosed that a coalition for the Bush (Sr.!) campaign included a number of outspoken Nazis and anti-Semites. The article prompted six leaders of Bush's coalition to resign.” This was confirmed by an investigative article in the Philadelphia Inquirer concerning the Bush team's inclusion of Nazis (David Lee Preston, "Fired Bush backer one of several with possible Nazi links," September 10, 1988.)

URGENT NOTICE: After watching Bush at the GOP National Convention stand on the graves of 3,000 9/11 victims and claim he is more qualified to lead the war on terrorism than John Kerry, I said to hell with making money from my new book, "George Dub-ya Bush, the Phony Fighter Pilot."
