Dominoes 101

Once again Sullivan goes for the Domino Theory as the root cause of Al-Qaeda's brand of Islamofascist Terrorism. Pay no attention to the corrupt, less-than-democratic, repressive regimes of our "allies". Pay no attention to the utter futility that young men and now women feel under these regimes. Al-Qaeda is this millenium's Soviet Union, albeit a "stateless" one since we knocked over Afghanistan (remember that place?). Here's a bit of Sullivan in a rare (for me) quote:

When clever anti-war types insist there is not and never has been any connection between the fight for democracy in Iraq and the war against terror, they are thinking in terms of legalities and technicalities - not strategy. The only way to meaningfully defang Islamist terror is to transform the region. If we don't, we will simply be putting out small fires for ever, instead of dealing with root causes. The root cause is the lack of democracy in the region, which gives these religious fanatics the oxygen they need.
Substitute "communism" for "Islamist terror" and "The Soviets" for Al-Qaeda and "Vietnam/SouthEast Asia for Iraq, and be afraid, be very afraid. Sullivan is parroting the Neocon Party Line, right down to the semi-colons and trying to get everyone to buy it...it's the argument for the new millenium to justify the second Gulf of Tonkin Resolution...how long will it take before Andrew sees the writing on the wall he helped put there?

He's still helping his hero be the "War Prezit" he always wanted to be...being a pilot was just too, Pedestrian I guess.

Shorter Andrew Sullivan: When smarter people prove me wrong they forget that might, not truth, makes right.

Why not combine the Domino Theory with Andrew's Flypaper Theory: Each and every ally of George W in the Coalition will attract the terrorists in their countries.

A big part of the Bush doctrine is to support the dictatorship of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. To turn a blind eye to the human rights abuses of Jordan, where rape victims are stoned. To support the police state of Egypt. Bush minions like Sullivan are enablers and promoter of the fascism they say is so horrible. Over used phrase, but we need a new "vision". That vision isn't coming from the BIG government-tax and spend wing-nuts. It's just business as usual from the party of smoke and mirrors. I understand now more then ever the rise of Stalin and Hitler, most people are sheep...easily manipulated; especially when it comes to fears of foreign threats, real or imagined. Hype and overreaction are the Republican stock and trade. Comical, if not for all the dead and wounded. If BushCo. is re-elected, we can look forward to Patriot Act II, a wing-nut Supreme Court, the erosion of the middle class, and the end of Jeffersonian democracy.
Kerry isn't perfect, no one in politics is, but with Kerry at the helm we can really start the 21st century, instead of regressing to the bad good ol' days of Herbert Hoover and Joseph McCarthy.

Democracy is a wonderful concept, too bad this administration doesn't believe that it is a necessity for allies (or for the US - but I live in Florida).

The United States works best when the checks and balances built into the Constitution work. Under the current Republican contol of everything and the failure of the Congress to exert its role, we have disaster.

It is the height of hypocrisy for Republicans to fail to take the responsibility for everything that has gone wrong.
