How interesting that the Times gives Op-Ed space to Sullivan, to whine about conservatives who won't accept "Gay Marriage" (or "Marriage" as Sullivan calls it). The one person I would not expect to miss the point (sardonic laughter here) about the conservative viewpoint on Gays and Marriage writes as though even Pat Robertson will one day be performing same-sex ceremonies, just because?

He seems to forget that the christo-fascists (even if they have gay friends) would rather die than admit gays are human. The Catholic Church, Sullivans Religious Opiate of 'Choice', an institution famous for coming down on the wrong side of many issues with a sledge hammer, has been whispering sweet little anti-Gay missives in the ears of many politicians and adherants for years. Our gay-basher in Chief is proposing amending our constitution to ensure that these new unions are no more than a footnote in our history.

How can someone purportedly so smart be so dumb? From a Newsweek Article

The new Newsweek poll out this week find increasing acceptance among Americans for same-sex unions as Massachusetts gets set to allow the first legally- recognized same-sex marriages in the nation.

The poll shows that a majority (51%) of adults approve of some form of legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples; 28 percent say they favor full marriage rights, while 23 percent favor civil unions or partnerships but not gay marriage.

So surveys are showing that folks just aren't all that upset about same-sex unions, is it the Sullivans and Robertsons/Falwells who keep the debate alive to score points to keep their agendas alive with their constituencies? In the R/F case, I know who the constituency is....in Sullivans case it seems to me that many folks who are comfortable in their own skin, whatever that may be, just want to get on with their lives without a label, any label. And Andrew is not letting them do that...because he's got a point to make. Or maybe I'm dead wrong, and Andrew's a hero.

Note (this was in my draft and did not survive CTRL-V): and for the record, how about just marriage, no big "M", no Gay, no nothing, just a couple of folks living, loving and being. With the right to celebrate their love and lives, grow old, get divorced, have kids if they choose and have to put up with teenagers...whatever.

What did the polls say about desegregating schools in 1954? The polls are not relevant to what is right and wrong here. Neither is the Catholic Church. Hurray for Massachussets and its stance on civil rights!

As a survivor of Catholic high school ("I'm a survivor! No, I'M a survivor!"), I can tell you with great certainty that the Catholic Church is the last place to go for critical thinking, a belief in civil rights, or to learn the difference between right and wrong. Well, with the possible exception of some South American priests teaching liberation theology. Or have all fo those guys been murdered yet?

I agree with dean about the Roman Catholic Church being no place to expect critical thinking. Actually, I vent about that on my blog vis-a-vis the bishops who are now calling on clergy to refuse communion to not just pro-choice (or pro-gay marriage or pro-stem cell research) public figures, but mere voters as well.

The post is from Saturday and entitled "Detestable enormities."

Nice site Ise, added to my bookmarks. I'll read it after Jo of course.

Dean,

Polls shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, many conservative populists (cf. Bill O'Reilly) seem to think it's just fine to leave these things up to the majority ("the folks").

End the distinction of same-sex.

Or how about hristian gay marriage? You know- NO SEX MARRIAGE!

Two people together that have no sex! Just like they want it!

Wait Pat RObertson's kid is a year older than his marriage and Cheney's is 3 days older than his deferment.

Enough to make you sick. Not morning sickness either.

I know that Steve. I'm a little hard-headed when it comes to the rules, though. Tyranny of the majority over the minority and all that stuff. The reason they wrote the Constitution and amendments in the first place. You see where I'm coming from. I'm thinking of Bobby. You know, seeing things as they should be and asking "Why not?"

What's with you people? You act like Christianity is a plague, and it probably is for you. People get so upset at Christians (abbreviated "Cs" hereafter) because they flat out say that some things people do are wrong, AND THEY ARE. But the Cs are not the only people who do not want gay marriage. Mainly those who realize that it will not stop there. What about the guy who decides he loves his sister (romantically)? Why shouldn't they get married? What about the next guy, who wrote an AI program and is now in love with his computer? All of these people will be pushing for equal rights, and THEY ARE JUST AS RIGHT. Translation: they are equally wring.
Biology is the way it is. Most C morals are based on biology and its proper functioning. Try to go against it, and bad things will happen. Disease, social upheaval, etc. Is this a 'punishment' from God? Who are we to say? I don't believe so, though. I think God put down right and wrong, good and evil, based on How Things Are. You can be homosexual if you want, but it is going against the very nature of what you are, and only bad things will come of it.
Another point you are completely overlooking: The Catholic Church (hereafter abbreviated CC...and I am definitely NOT Catholic) does not exist for the sake of its members. It is not a publicly traded commodity. The CC is an organization which (it presumes) is in place SOLELY for the glorification of God and His worship, and to do His will as declared in the Bible. They don't have to think critically, aside from trying to analyze what exactly the Bible means. And though I am not a Catholic, I certainly do admire the Popes who have stuck to their guns despite going against the all-powerful and righteous Public Opinion on such matters as homosexuality, divorce, abortion and birth control. I don't agree with what they say on many key issues, but I have the utmost respect for someone who refuses to give in to public pressure, risking losing thousands of parishoners(?), and instead stands tall and says outright, "The Bible says that divorce, adultery and fornication are wrong. If you don't agree to refrain, you may not return." Snaps to him. To them. The CC is not there to keep people happy--least of all those who don't like Biblical morals--it is there to let them know which of the things they're doing are wrong, and what right things they should do, and that's what, for the most part, they do.
On another note, I must say that civilization, American society in particular, is beginning to fall apart in a big way strictly because of a lack of adherence to Biblical morals and tenets. You people with your high standards of freedom and live-and-let-live attitude may think you are doing people a great favor by standing up for the "rights of people to live as they choose," but all you're doing is rushing headlong into a sinking hole from which there is only one way out: Good. No, that's not a typo. Not even God, just Good. It would thrill me to death if secular society would draft its own version of the Ten Commandments. Something anti-religious fascists (...ha...) could sink their teeth into because it lacked any "taint" of religion. Ask yourself: Is there really anything wrong with honoring your father and mother? Is there some evil in having one mate for life? Does it offend people to be told not to lie, steal or kill? Unfortunately, many people these days would answer yes to most of these. (I didn't say most people, or to all of them.) "We have to be lenient, tolerant and understanding." "We can't risk making someone feel bad." "We can't judge them from our own limited perspective." Well, these days that's true, because we now have whole generations of people who never received disciplined instruction on how they should behave. Just the common sense things have fallen by the wayside. I can't drive down the street anymore without dodging children of ALL ages. When I was young (and I still am, at heart), I knew that when I heard a car coming, I had darn well better get out of the road, because I am smaller and more fragile than a car! Today children are told that they are so special and have so many rights and blah blah blah. What has that gotten us? Kids who don't know how to behave and are put on rittalin and a thousand other drugs because they can't keep from being disruptive. And why shouldn't they be disruptive; they were told they were special and wonderful all the while they were becoming that way!
This nation is becoming nothing more than a large group of buttheads, and angry ones at that. You are angry at conservatives and those with moral standards because they "only want to tell people how to live." That is not true. We are angry at you because you are fighting with all you have against conservatism and morality. Is that untrue?
"Reproductive Rights." This cause is nothing more than the desire for sex without consequences. Which, by the way. is most important for people who want to be promiscuous, or are just too stupid to practice "safe sex" (an oxymoron in itself).
"Freedom of Speech." Another cause which has been perverted from its original intent. The founding fathers did not intend that anyone should be able to have a bass cannon in their trunk waking everyone up at the early hour of 11:00 pm, or that they should have the right to use foul language on the radio, or that videos should be available that use the gruesome deaths of human beings as entertainment. These things should be banned. No one would suffer if they were, and many people would be better off. The same goes for books. A world of enrichment could be offered without EVER printing the word "f**k."
I can now hear many of 'you' screaming, "See? you would like to be as fascist as we say!" Well, if wanting my kids to be unable to go to a friend's house and have the friend say, "Look, this is that Faces of Death video. Watch this..." then yes, I'd like to be a fascist. And I'd be happy, and your kids would be happy, unless they've already been poisoned with the lust for seeing suffering.
Anyway, I tend to ramble sometimes. Read the Ten Commandments and think about how society would be different if they were laws. Think carefully. Would we be better off?
What about your version? "Do as thou wilt, and love one another." That sounds very lofty and stuff. But when you get stabbed by a gang of 12 year olds in your own home because they didn't have a father around to give them guiding, loving discipline and a firm grasp of what is right and wrong, good and evil, I hope that you can die smiling and telling them, "It's okay, kids, I understand you. You're just in need of some counseling, rittalin and more liberal education. While you're raping my wife, please use a condom, because abortions aren't cheap."
"Don't tell us what to do," they'll say.
