Crap, utter Crap

From a readers e-mail:

I have just returned from accompanying my father-in-law to the Memorial Dedication.

I will not take much of your time. But you should know that almost every vet we spoke with over the weekend was upset by the (p)Resident having had his name etched in the granite above the name of the architect. It is on the right hand entrance as you face the gold star wall/Lincoln Memorial.

Someone should speak out loudly about this abuse of power.
I would have placed AWOL letters on the granite but I did not wish to detract from the real purpose of the weekend.

Who knew that the Coward-in-Chief, that most ignoble of leaders would have his name inscribed on the same walls with folks who served truly honorably and not by technicality.

I know it's sort of traditional for mayors and governors to have their names engraved in sites that they pork-barrel into existance, but this is the WWII Memorial, a National Treasure for the generations, not freaking statuary in city park.

What gives with this, and can it be removed ... ever?

Comments:

One of my historical fields of study is ancient Egypt. By multiple historical precedent - yes.

And it will be a highly-symbolic action. It will probably go along with the symbolic burning of the blue drapes to hide the statues--ahem, to try to make Crisco look less ugly by comparison.

And highly-symbolic burnings of statutes and decrees on the mall, along with chiseling off the names of the anathematized pharoah.

I could see including Bush I and Clinton's names, since they were instrumental in the construction of that memorial according to what I have heard. I could even see them keeping Bush II on if the other two were included, but not Bush II by himself. That's just more arrogance. Thatguy will never take a modest path that matches the modesty of his accomplishments.

bellatrys is right. It wouldn't be hard to remove his name at all. You could always discreetly patch over it and probably make it look like it was never there, or you could scratch it off and put a plaque of some kind over the spot with something more appropriate on it.

Or how about this? Just chisel in a line above it that says "Spit here" with an arrow pointing to the name.

I wonder how many vets at the ceremony knew that W's grandfather supplied the Nazis in Germany with millions of dollars to fund their war effort, and that the U.S. government "froze his assets" (i.e. took away all his money) when they found out.

If they were going to put the names of Presidents on War Memorials, it should be those who were President during the War, not President for the dedication.

How about "Crayon's for Veterans"

Who ever visits the WWII memorial must write "AWOL" on the monument next to shrub's name.

I used to think that W. was just stupid but now after this incident and that he now has Saddam's gun...I really think he's wacked in the head as well.

FDR , Truman, Ike have more business there. Patton has a star on the wall there. MacArthur, Marshall.

Bush I(perhaps) and Clinton. This would be nice- Clinton's name ABOVE both of the Bush names.

Dole's name also he had more to do with the monument and he never bailed on his fellow soldiers.

Prescott's name was on the Brandenburg wreath...wasn't it?

"I would have placed AWOL letters on the granite but I did not wish to detract from the real purpose of the weekend."

Well I guess it would be ok to have his name on a monument if he died. The chimp-in-charge is busy trying to wax himself by doing hazardous things like eating "pretzels" or falling of a bike like an uncoordinated little girl.

Anyone catch Mike Walker's radio show talking about how "Curious George's" people are working hard to make Chimp-boy look "macho" as well as "not gay"?
