After watching 60 Minutes it ought to be pretty clear that Poppy Bush bought Junior an Honorable Discharge just like he bought him a seat in an F-102. The disobedience of the direct order alone to get a flight physical should have bought him a courts-martial, and nothing more.
The next wingnut who says Preznit Wastrel got an honorable discharge needs to tell me what the going price was for one of those in 1973. Inquiring minds and all that...
More difficult to brush off are two official memos that seem to contradict previous White House statements.
One "orders" the president to report for a physical. The White House has said the physical was "not necessary" because the president stopped flying.
And where the White House says the president's flying status was revoked simply for missing that physical, the memo points to both the missed physical and "failure to perform to (USAF/TexANG) standards."
"The official files tell the facts," says Bartlett. "And the facts are President Bush served. He served honorably. And that's why he was honorably discharged."
Yeah, the official files show he was an AWOL fratboy, missing in "action". And for the wingnut pricks who claim the "I can't remember" defense like that moronic congressman on 60 Minutes...for some reason I can remember my squadron mates from all my squadrons, even the Training Command. Surely someone as visible (and a party-boy) would stand out in someone's memory. I guess that's the part where they republicans want us all to be 10 years old, eh, and perfectly gullible?

Comments:
Bush disgraces all veterans. But that's nothing new. 60 minutes was nothing new. Anyone that's served for 10 minutes in the military inherently knows that Bush's TANG story is pure D bullshit.
Jo, keep giving them hell. More people should be reading your blog, especially more Vets. I'm grateful your voice is out loud and clear in the blogosphere.
Look, George W. Bush did NOT crash that TANG trainer jet while flying drunk and coked sky high in early 1972, and did NOT reach a quiet agreement with his superiors (with the help of Poppy) to never fly again, with the missed flight exam as the excuse. None of that ever happened. Lies, all lies!
Jo, the MF'r sitting in the white house has never accomplished anything in his entire life without totally fucking up whatever he was in charge of... Bet if the truth were told, he was just as bad when he had the baseball team... I don't think that he was in charge of too much there also...
He was one of the chickenshit officers that we all ran into in our tours... There were enlisted personnel of the same caliber, most of those usually were found out and either squared away, or were discharged with less than an honorable discharge... The Coward, had PI and people who were above him knew that if they did anything to rock the boat, that their careers were over...
It's too bad that the command senior enlisted have not come forward...
Betcha he was doin coke with more than a few young airmen... I ran into ensigns and JG's who liked to fratranize with the junior enlisted as they felt they had an in and a friend in the Commissioned Ranks.. This also gave the young officer a feeling of power and
also fed his ego... Sound like someone whom we have come to know and despise??

Gentlemen and Ladies -
We must always remember who's duty it is to hold those in power accountable for their actions. That would be ours. Never forget -they work for US.
We have a scumbag for a CinC. If you don't know it - you haven't been paying attention.
I hope and pray someone has the common fucking decency to hold him accountable. At least for the Honor and Integrity of the good men and women who have, and continue to serve the United States military.
Myself included.

One thing the press keep letting the Shrub get away with is his claim that the TANG stopped flying the plane he was trained on, the F-102, and therefore he did not have to fly any more. Uh, what? First of all, the TANG flew the Dart until 1974, and secondly, when your unit changes airplanes, you get off your dead butt and retrain. Hello!
Jo,
As I understand the way the system worked: if a guardsman failed to fulfill their service responsibilities they would be put into active service and sent to Vietnam.
Is that correct?
If so, is there any way of discovering if that happened to anyone?
If so, could those people be interviewed to find out what their experience was?
Or is it possible that their names are on the VN Memorial Wall?
Obviously, there must be people who did not receive special treatment like W....we need to hear from them.

Jo,
Go read the Salon.com article on AWOL. Well worth sitting through the ad for a day pass.
It goes into further detail on how when bush wanted to transfer out of the tang, he listed the wrong plane he was trained for (incidentally a plane that the airforce no longer used). The approving command in colorado caught the error and sent it back to the TANG. The shit tried to lie his way out of showing up.
The article is a good read, and gives credit to theawolproject.com, which is run by a guy who's a caterer, and has done all the research on last feb. document dump by the WH.

Hmmm. I wonder how Killian died. The dead can tell no tales, as Bartlett made clear. And the living can spin the memos as they want.

I like the line Bartlett is pursuing now: Bush didn't have to follow the order to take the physical because there was no reason to take a physical.
Well. I am sure anyone who has ever had to follow an order they thought was inconvenient or didn't make sense sure feel stupid they didn't use the well known "I don' wanna" escape clause.
Here are links to Viet Nam era newspaper articles about 2 guys who missed training sessions while in The Guard. Involuntary activation. The 1st guy missed 7 sessions.

I'd love for someone to find these guys and get their comments on AWOL's missing a years worth of training sessions.

Boy, do I hate to say this, but I think the Killian memos are forgeries. The font is a proportional font, there's a superscripted "th" in one that 1973 typewriters just didn't do, and the signatures don't match Killian's signature in Bush's files.
Just about the time the AP let loose with some real advance on the AWOL research, these patent forgeries pop up. I'm willing to bet Karl Rove typed these things up himself, and I'd even lay money down that he copied them from actual Killian memos.
I want a military board of inquiry. I want Bush striped of his honorable discharge.

Jo, regarding your "10 years old" remark, you should check out this Prospect article.
Keep up the good work!

Hate to tell you this, bolobiffin, but I had a circa 1965 Underwood manual typewriter as a kid that would indeed do the superscripted 'th' (as well as a superscripted 'rd'). I'm fairly sure that a '73 Seletric could do it, and the Selectric Executive most certainly did do proportional fonts.
But it's becoming increasingly more unlikely that these documents are forgeries. The May 4 order, if typed in Word, has three potential superscripts - a first "th", a "st", and a second "th". The first two are NOT superscripted, which means that anyone typing in Word would have to go back and physically wrestle Word to the ground to keep it from superscripting those letters.
Rove took the original, typed the copy and then spliced them together.
You really expect the So Called Lousy Media to cross t's and dot the eyes of Bushco.
It's why Bush dumped the docs first...
Rather is sticking his guns. Nice to see the old S.H.I.T. student turned reporter who was part of the LBJ insertions finally sport a woody on these w.olves-
Rather was a big guy on covering Dallas and the Warren commission. He also filmed resitance with the Afghans vs. the Soviets. (no telling how damned much GPS help he got and how much Osama contacts they laundered in doing it...)
Guess he gives a damn after all...
