The upcoming dust ball called Earth

One of the least talked-about aspects of the 1600 Crew agenda has been their hatred of the environment. With oil and gas lobbyists occupying more key decision-making positions than any time in history, in an administration so openly hostile to clean air, clean water and the preservation of natural resources it'll be a miracle if there's any breathable air or drinkable water left of the 1600 Crew remains in power. And animals...fugeddaboudit. Go to the Zoo.

In a recent interview, Michael O. Leavitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, summed up the Bush administration's philosophy. "There is no environmental progress without economic prosperity," Mr. Leavitt said. "Once our competitiveness erodes, our capacity to make environmental gains is gone. There is nothing that promotes pollution like poverty."
Except maybe gutting every regulation on the books to better suit your campaign contributors.

I wonder what the good folks in New Orleans will think of pollution laws if the storm bitch-slaps the Big Easy? I understand from reading various stories on-line that it could be a pretty toxic aftermath due to chemical plants, refineries and raw sewage. Something tells me reservations at some of the fancy New Orleans eatin' establishments won't be real hard to come by for awhile.

Comments:

As has been pointed out by others, if the administration powers and their wingnut fundamentalist and ultra-right wing Israeli supporters actually do believe that we are fast approaching Judgement Day, then they would feel no need to protect the environment for future generations. Given this expectation, no wonder they are cashing in on short-term financial and political gains from selling out on this issue.

It has been economic progress that has caused much of the environmental problems that we have today. With a recognition of environmental problems, balancing is necessary to control the evils of pollution, etc. There are times when you just have to call in the exterminator to remedy infestation. (No, I am not suggesting Tom Delay.) Before it is time to do so, we must lessen the environmental problems that economic progress can bring about. This is called long range planning, not just looking ahead to the next election.

Yeah people laughed at the move on show which basically warned of weather anomaly spikes as a result of global warming.

Dumb librul movies. 215 MPH winds would never happen in FL....
Well at least we have it fixed! The state of FLA bails out big insurance in these events, other southern states do not! Time for states to raise sales tax and insurance tariffs to subsidize that injury and drive more health care providers away!

It helps when you brother is preznit and can send more unpaid mandates your way at other's expense.

And here's a question: What happens to economic competitiveness when the environment is in the shitter?

Ya gotta think these things through, folks.

To that toxic gumbo of chemicals and sewage, don't forget to add vermin (dead and alive) and reptiles (ditto; some venomous).

"What happens to economic competitiveness when the environment is in the shitter?"

People having to pay for their daily ration of clean(ed) air and water, massive new cooling systems for apartment buildings becoming de rigeur as the ozone layer finally disappears, melting icecaps fuelling a boom in personal watercraft and private artificial islands ... why, environmental catastrophe is just chock full of new economies! You just got to think -big,- brother.
