A day in the life

Remember. The Army has what they've got. So sayeth The Oracle of Memos, Rummy the Great.

For the next 20 minutes, Smiley's platoon engaged an invisible enemy on Mosul's streets in the kind of clattering midafternoon gunfight that has become commonplace here in recent weeks. The ensuing chase led Smiley's men and a small Iraqi National Guard contingent into a sophisticated ambush -- and exposed the risks facing U.S. soldiers here and across Iraq as they struggle to face down a determined insurgency before the Jan. 30 elections.
All the best to the soldiers, it's hard to be critical of their performance in the Mess in Mesopotamia.

On the other hand, when would Jenna and NotJenna be donning their Cammies for a tour in the sand? Never? Oh, I guess like Uncle Dick, they have "other priorities".

And after all this, what happens if some Fundamentalist Islamic regime is in power a year from now? Will the 1600 Crew allow that, as long as access to the Iraqi Oil reserves is granted? Or will there be yet another "invasion", because we need a compliant client state, not one who will always hate us?

Your last graf is most relevant. Don't these people see that PROVIDING another theocratic Islamic state is exactly what Osama bin Forgotten WANTS?

I'm really sorry for the guys who are getting chopped up in Iraq - even though the vast majority voted for Bush and Rumsfeld and that whole maladroit crew of incompetents. The best lesson for them is: you get what you pay for. You should have gone to war with a better president.

From an old soldier: Any soldier who is even thinking about going to Iraq should read "Imperial Hubris" by the CIA expert on Islamic terrorism. At least you'll know what you're getting into. As opposed to the fluff and crap you're being fed by your generals and politicians.

I believe the other one is called Tonica. That or Vermoutha.

Anyway, they're Busy Doing Good. High Proof volunteered to teach small children in Harlem (Bartender's School of NY?), and Naked Lunch went off to Africa to work with AIDS paitients.

I read it last Fall -- that was what they were planning to do. Maybe got them mixed up one with the other (if anyone'll forgive a martini metaphor) but one was going to Africa and the other to Harlem, to Do Good.

So it must be that's what they're up to. Since they said so, and a Bush's word is ... ah, fuck it.
