Interestingly the 1600 Crew really is the New American Taliban, in its larval stages. Or Government by Python, maybe.
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake, [angels sing] her arm clad in the
purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of
the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to
carry Excalibur. [singing stops] That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing
swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive
power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some
farcical aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!*
President Bush suggested today that religion was a factor in his choice of Harriet Miers for the U.S. Supreme Court.
...
"People are interested to know why I picked Harriet Miers," Bush said. "They want to know Harriet Miers's background. They want to know as much as they possibly can before they form opinions. Part of Harriet Miers life is her religion," he said, noting that she was also a "pioneer woman and a trailblazer in the law."
Everytime that Preznit Barely Literate or his Lump talks about Miers, they make sure to point out that she was a "pioneer woman and a trailblazer" in legal circles. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Attorneys who know her and her work seem to think that she's a third-rate hack, who has argued persuasivley on behalf of clients, and even won a few cases (well, that's what clients pay for, right?). But as for judicial credentials, there's not much there. And her attendance at the church of her choice should hardly be the most compelling reason for appointing her to the court.
Unless the goal is to Talibanize the judiciary. In which case we are well and truly fucked. Coming soon, howitzers at dawn at Mt Rushmore? Stay tuned as they say. Film at 11...if that's not illegal by then too. Harriet Miers, clad in the purest shimmering samite...lobbing swords. Now there's an image for the ages, and it's close to our system of government now.
Amazing that the conservatives are demanding a paper trail and questioning her capabilities.... all the things they were telling the liberals it wasn't necessary to ask about Roberts.
