In 2004 John Kerry's critics were pasting the image of him being an "effete" out-of-touch liberal all over the place. John Kerry did not help himself out too much. Perception, is after all reality with todays "sound-bite" media. So when Kerry called for the filibuster of Alito, I was pretty happy. John Kerry being a leader. Cool. But...
Why is he in Davos? If he's going to lead on this, his ass ought to be in DC, pounding on his colleagues doors from sunup to to sundown. He ought to be Leading, not talking about Bird Flu in Davos.
His staffers ought to be there putting out continuous press releases of those meetings, documenting on-line and in realtime why the wayward and non-supportive Democratic Senators are rationalizing their support for Alito (and yes, not supporting the filibuster is supporting Alito) even as they say they'll vote against him.
Pretty black or white, to me anyhow. Either Mr. Kerry leads by actually you know, Leading. Or he just gets on the bus and rides until the next election, knowing that once again his non-response response cost him the chance to make a difference in the lives of all Americans for the next 30 or so years.

Lt. Kerry is reporting for duty via first available transportation according to CNN.
I want to see the Dems with spines vote 'no' on cloture and then filibuster Scalito. It's better to go down swinging than to run away crying like the Dems have in the past (aka cowardice), or to argue they couldn't fight because they have to prepare for when it really gets bad some time in the future (aka appeasement)--and then asking us to let them serve as our protectors again, cuz next time the Dems will really get those repubs... So go get 'em, Kennedy and Kerry, and bring the rest of the Dems in on this. Don't listen to the other side say that the Scalito filibuster is "political", cuz yes it is, and it is not an insult; their being Democrats obligates them to commit themselves to our common Democratic values, and to stand together as a party to protect those values. If not them, who will be our Democratic voice?
