Hackett and why I'm pissed

I have gotten a lot of email (thanks, all) about the withdrawl of Paul Hackett from the Ohio Senatorial race. Needless to say, I'm pissed off about it. I'm not pissed at Hackett, I'm annoyed with the Democratic "leadership", and I use that term very loosely.

Paul Hackett represented not just a chance to put a veteran of the Iraqi War into Congress, but it represented a chance to place a standard-bearer in the Senate for Democrats who are sick of the spineless equivocation of the Senate Democratic Caucus [we're looking at you Hillary, Chuck and Dianne].

I understand that Hackett did not want to grovel for fund-raising. I don't know that he'd have had to, with the netroots ability to raise money behind him. If the DSCC had their heads out of their asses, they might have realized that Paul Hackett was not going to be a candidate who could run over and kiss the ass of their choice in the electoral dialing-for-dollars marathon. Maybe they could have come up with a way to help him overcome that obstacle.

Sherrod Brown is a good man, and can certainly give Mike DeWine a run for his money this year. But, he's an "establishment" politician. He's going to run his campaign by the DSCC playbook, he's going to kiss Chuck Shumer's ass, and Harry Reid's ring. He's going to be more of the same, another Senator who hides from his shadow, who won't be any more than politically correct about everything as it pertains to issues that affect Americans, for fear of retribution from the 1600 Crew and their attack machinery.

It was our loss to have Paul Hackett go home. I'm sorry that the DSCC felt the need to encourage a primary in Ohio, and the attendant fundraising and work that goes with it. I think it cost us all a good man, and a chance to have an unflappable voice for change.

So, great job Chuck and Harry. Please don't call looking for money any time soon. I'll send a few dollars to Brown's campaign because DeWine needs to go, not because I support your efforts.

I feel exactly the same - Hackett could have been our strong voice on defense and security issues for many years to come. Schumer and the DCCC shot off their foot, and probably did much more damage nationally than they realize.
My contributions will go to Russ Feingold, and other local dems in Wisconsin. To hell with the dem so-called "leadership". With leaders like these, I say go around them. If Reid was involved in this execution, that surprises me. I was a fan.

What's wrong with primaries? Yes, the cost money and even the winners get roughed up a bit, but what's wrong with a little rough-and-tumble democracy? The insiders always get this wrong, convinced their own "wisdom" trumps democracy.

On the other hand, if Hackett was such a tough guy, why didn't he continue the fight?

That's pretty horrible about Hackett. I was looking forward to voting for him.

Not to change the subject, but check out this article on MSNBC. The military set up a counterintelligence academy in Iraq to teach soldiers ... pretty much what we've been saying all along.

"On the surface, a raid that captures a known insurgent or terrorist may seem like a sure victory for the coalition," (the textbook) observes in red block letters. It continues, "The potential second- and third-order effects, however, can turn it into a long-term defeat if our actions humiliate the family, needlessly destroy property, or alienate the local population from our goals."

I'm a Vet and I understand how you feel but remember in the long run it's the Repigs who are the bad guys. I think we have to get used to not getting our way and suck it up. Now lets get back on track and focus on taking back the House and Senate in 06 and the White House in 08. I promise you Hackett will be back.

Watch out for ratfucking. Redpubs get into campaigns or seed slander into campaigns online and by fake sourcing phone calls.

Example- the New hampsire phone banks jamming that essentially locked one person to the lead in the Primary and then jammed GOTV efforts on election day for call-in vote shuttle services.

They've ratfucked hackett and tried to swiftboat all Ohio Dems.

Hackett did not want to compromise his message to corporate donors, few businesses will help unless they get to compromise outsourcing.

Hackett would not dilute his message and we need him to step up as a shadow candidate for every election. He can help other Fighting Dems develop a message and build the staff necessary to win.

Hackett is a marketing opportunity ready to be made. Let him get to talk radio and say what needs to be said. Someone at Air America needs to let him speak.

But do not let the ratfucking wound the cause. Hackett backed out, stop letting them turn soil on something they helped cause.

Time will tell soon enough. Hackett had his office stolen in the Schmidt race, and Dems are more worried about opposing Hackett in a Primary than winning a race in the state if you go by DLCC playbook.

Sue the DLCC. Make a msall donation and hold them liable to it. If they fail to campaign on your interests sue them for the big enchilada- false advertising and the FCC/FTC/FEC rules.

Hit 'em where it hurts- in their wallet.

Long time no see all!

By the way, we're training Mercs in Arkansas. We had to build a village before we could bomb it.
Fallujah scale models come to Marion!

Probably helps with training all the prison guards employed nearby...

I got even more POed when they suggested that Hackett from for the House against Schmidt.

Hackett ran for the Senate after Brown said he wasn't going to run, and Hackett told local Democrats in his district that he wasn't going to run for the House seat.

He gave is word, but that doesn't seem to mean much in Washington.

Hackett Sherrod Brown and rumours. What is going on here?

Living in the Congressional district in which Hackett ran this is my take. The Democrats essentially guaranteed themselves a loss in the Senate race. Rep. Sherrod Brown's region of the state is leans Democratic. Any Democrat probably would have carried that area. Hackett is from a heavily Republican area. If Hackett could have gotten the percentage of votes in that area in a Senate race that he did in the Congressional race he would have won the Senate race. Brown doesn't have a chance in that area.

Brown Swiftboated him, and the DCSS backstabbed him, just as this whole "Band of Brothers" CHARADE started. It must be a new strategy at the DNC, start a grassroots Veterans campaign, and then stab the leader of it in the back..GOOD CAll!
It is clear, no party wants veterans to lead it. The Democrats can eat me.
This could have been solved so easily. All the dems had to do was have Hackett and Brown run a primary, making sure they had equal money. Hackett would have kicked his ass. The guy is a tea drinking liberal...a bloviating hyperverbalizing Washington Insider. Losing Hackett meant more than losing just one candidate...WE LOST A GRASS ROOTS MOVEMENT.We lost an image. You guys think the Republicans won't point to this everytime someone mentions the Band of Brothers??? The party insiders destroyed us.

I realize I'm jumping on late here, but I'd like to use this opportunity to talk about another veteran running in an important Senate race - a man of such quality, integrity, and caliber that he can make the Democratic Party forget all about Paul Hackett overnight.

That man is James Webb.
Former 5th Regiment company commander Vietnam Vet James Webb.
Former Secretary of the Navy James Webb.
Navy Cross winner James Webb.
Best-selling author James Webb.
Emmy award winning journalist James Webb.

Democrat James Webb.

Here in Virginia, James Webb is going to defeat Harris Miller in the Democratic Primary for US Senate in June, then pull the political upset of the year by kicking George Allen out of his Senate seat in November.

His campaign is just getting started, but he is soon to announce a hand-picked staff of star operatives from across the nation.
Jim Webb is here to WIN.

As a Dem Vet myself (15 months as a CO in OIF1 & 2) I really liked Hackett, but when it comes to his primary fight with Sherrod Brown, we have to face facts.
Paul Hackett's no politician. This is great on one hand, because he's got the guts and credibility to tell the truth about Iraq and the Administration. But he was weak on other issues - college kids were stumping him with questions as simple as, "what do you think about health care?" His campaign burned through cash like an out of control internet startup. And his opponent may be an "establishment" guy and career politician, but Sherrod Brown is one of the country's smartest voices on fair trade policy - probably the most important issue to Ohio's large conservative blue-collar workforce.

My point is, Ohioans have the right guy for Senate. Paul Hackett's a man of great character and courage - I hope he does his policy homework, because he could be a great politician and leader.

But he was merely the beta version of the new "Fighting Dem" candidate.
The new and vastly improved, full-featured version is now on the American political map, and he's going to change how this country views the Democratic Party.

I STRONGLY urge the moderator of this fine blog to check out the Webb campaign at www.webbforsenate.com or the blog at www.draftjameswebb.com and post about Webb.

We need help spreading the message about this fine American leader and true patriot.

I have just returned from Hell and even though Mr. Hackett may not be from my branch of the service : I am mad as hell about what has transpired because he is a fellow soldier. The tactics that have been used against myself ever since I had announced my intentions to run for the U.S. Senate have taught me that our democracy is not always so democratic. My family's benefits and income were threatened as well as my being placed in a federal pen for the rest of my life and then just recently my taxes were audited supposedly randomly while I was over in a combat zone and every penny was then taken straight out of my family's bank account. So, I have learned the hard way about so called American Democracy but I know one thing they never should have attacked my family for now I will fight non-violently the fight to rescue the War on Terror from those who have hijacked it to enrich themselves and their corporate lackeys.

I have just returned from Iraq and the lie being foisted upon you the American people. I have ridden first hand day by day either as gunner or driver in my Humvee for a year long tour of hell in Iraq where everyday you have to play Russian Roulette with your life. Imagine having someone place a 357 magnum pistol next to your head everyday and praying that it won't go off. Then you start to get a feel for what some of us soldiers feel who go out of the wire everyday in Iraq.

Of course you always hear that we volunteered to defend our country and place our lives on the line well that it is true but what we did not volunteer for was to be slaughtered like sheep.

You see anybody who drives down the roads of Iraq through its cities and villages will pass by whole stretches of road where slaughter markets for sheep rebound. The stench from these slaughtered sheep is so strong sometimes that it is all one can do not to vomit when passing them. The passerby will see these poor sheep writhing and twisting in pain as their throats are cut and it is truly a pitiful sight as they slowly die with no way to defend themselves as their blood drain out in the street.

Well, the reason I had to bring up that whole example is to dismiss the criticism that we soldiers should die like sheep. But that's not the way it's going to be told to you the American people. What I have just told you is only the tip of the iceberg if you knew everything you would even redouble your efforts to get my poor fellow soldiers out of this grand lie foisted on us by grand liars.

I am not going to stand by as an American citizen and let this happen I will not be that citizen who says he was just following orders as the Nazi war criminals stated at Nuremburg. I am for fighting the War on Terror and not hijacking it to enrich my personal corporate donor friends and lackeys.
Our country is under attack from terrorist without and tyrants within.
Abraham Lincoln was right in his 1838 speech when he stated that the greatest danger that this country could face wouldn't be from our enemies outside of our country but from domestic tyrants inside it.

I will be officially running for the U.S. Senate as of March 29, 2006 and I will not officially campaign for it until that date. As of now I am not a candidate but will be in 33 days.
my views do not represent the U.S. government nor the Department of Defense

William...give me a break. Paul Hackett is a Major in the USMC, Sherrod Brown is a swiftboating eagle scout. His "Rank" Eagle Scout is actually on his bio..on his wbpage for Senate, that tell you anything? Hackett would have won,and won big. Brown is going to have a hard time of it. No one outside his district trusts him...no one. He is seen for what he is, a bloodsucking opportunist with no guts. The Democrats turned their backs on the Band of Brothers..they should have been fair to Hackett, and stood by their word, they did not.
